Coconoil to the rescue – 10kg bulk buy

coconoilCoconoil has saved the day… I’ve been searching for the impossible – cheap organic, virgin coconut oil. There really is no such thing, cheap does not compute with organic and virgin. Bulk buying could be the answer, couldn’t it.

My favourite brand has been Essential, which is a decent price in Indigo, Moseley but is not available on Amazon at the moment. For me, the best Amazon buy, not in bulk is Convive Virgin Coconut Food Oil, which is £15.99 a kilo. I digress, but is bulk buying the answer? Continue reading

Healthy refined coconut oil? Investigating the refining process

The earlier post on KTC coconut oil explains my investigation into whether this refined coconut oil is hydrogenated. We can conclusively say that it is not, which is good news. A commenter on that post contacted KTC and managed to get a detailed response from them concerning the refining process. Further they confirm that their coconut oil is NOT hydrogenated. So we can be doubly sure this is not an issue, hurray!

KTC coconut oil – hydrogenated or healthy? Vegan Heath investigates

KTC coconut oil
Source: Spices of India

KTC coconut oil is very cheap, especially when compared to Biona or Essential virgin coconut oil. In Balsall Heath it’s widely available in Asian convenience stores and would be a great affordable alternative.

There is the hydrogenated issue though. If KTC coconut oil is hydrogenated I ain’t touching the stuff. In a comment on a previous coconut oil post Sarojinididi of the Yogi Vegetarian blog wanted to know how you can tell. It’s not straightforward as coconut oil is solid most of the time in this country regardless of whether it’s Biona or KTC coconut oil.

Virgin coconut oil, raw and organic please!

In a very recent post I waffled on about coconut oil after I’d read a post from the wonderful Rich Roll warning us to only consume coconut oil sparingly. However, is this advice relevant if you consume virgin coconut oil?

virgin coconut oilAs a fan of organic, raw, virgin coconut oil – rather than a nasty hydrogenated version –  I was alarmed to read Rich Roll’s post based on a video from Dr Greger. I discussed this in the previous post but wanted to try to get to the bottom of the issue as Bruce Fife’s book Coconut Cures tells a very different story. Continue reading

Pure coconut oil, cholesterol and heart disease

Pure coconut oil – heart healthy or heart harmful?

In a recent blog post the amazing Rich Roll wrote about the potential for coconut oil to clog the arteries because as a saturated fat it raises LDL (bad cholesterol) levels. He includes a video in the post from the also wonderful Dr. Michael Greger of NutritionFacts.org which reviews some primary research on coconut oil and cholesterol. Apparently, coconut oil is a NOT a good guy and should be used sparingly. But is that the whole story and, importantly did the studies cited use unadulterated, pure coconut oil?
