Usually a traditional lemonade recipe has a lot of sugar in it, which is not the healthiest ingredient in the world and is pretty fattening. This traditional lemonade recipe from the Guardian journo Nigel Slater is a case in point. I do like that he includes the entire lemon with the caveat of using only quality organic lemons if possible – to avoid the wax and nasty pesticides retained in the peel. Well I’ve managed to create a lemonade recipe that has no added sugar and is definitely healthy!
As I used non-organic lemons the peel was removed but I too use filtered water but far less than in Slater’s recipe because my secret ingredient means you only need a very small amount of water. And that secret ingredient in my healthy lemonade recipe is….. melon. So I have come up with melon lemonade! In fact, it’s no more than melon and lemon juice BUT it is as good, or better, than any traditional lemonade I’ve ever tasted.
Introducing the melon lemonade recipe….
This is incredibly easy to make although you do need a juicer. My lovely masticating juicer chomps through the melon and makes it an easy job. It’ll take no more than15 minutes to make and you’ll get a good 1 litre or so. So here’s the ingredients
- one honeydew melon
- two lemons
- one big chunk of ginger
That’s all you need. Cut up the melon with a big old chopper, I used my coconut chopper which really made short work of the melon. Cut this into bits that will fit into the juicer. No need to throw out the pips these will be juiced along with the fruity bits. Then remove the peel from the lemon, unless it’s organic then chuck in everything apart from the tree attachment bit! And finally chop off a large chunk of ginger root.
Take all of these fruit lovelies and stick them in the juicer. You will get a lot of juice and you can add more or less lemon and ginger to taste. As it is a melon lemonade recipe I’d suggest leaving plenty of lemon in the mix. Finally pour a little filtered water into the juicer to flush out the last of the lemonade and you’re good!
So, is melon lemonade really any healthier than the traditional recipe?
Simple answer is yes! The melon has plenty of sugar as it is sweet but has lots of lovely vitamins and minerals which processed white sugar is missing. According to the Nutrition data website melons and lemons are packed with good guys. Just look at what’s included

I love this classic ad from 1973 – “I’m a secret lemonade drinker”. I do know that my melon lemonade recipe gives you a good bottles’ worth of lemonade and tons more nutrients than R Whites AND, importantly tastes loads better! It has been brought to my attention that melon is the ‘daddy’ of all hangover cures! While this is only anecdotal there is the suggestion by the presence nutrients outlined above that this could combat dehydration and restore the body from a damaging night on the tiles! Worth a punt, anyway.
